Bishop Stephen has written:  In solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the Barking Episcopal Area and in anticipation of the fact that we may all have to do this shortly, I am asking every church in the Chelmsford diocese to now close its doors to those coming for private prayer. The offering of worship must still go on each day and clergy (and appropriately authorised or licensed lay ministers) can still lead services in church. But we can no longer open our doors to those who may wish to come and pray in our buildings. This is not so much because the praying in the buildings unsafe, but we need to do all that we can to encourage people to stay indoors wherever possible, and our churches advertised as being open is giving a mixed message.
